USASBE is pleased to announce Steve Blank as the

2019 John E. Hughes Award for Entrepreneurial Achievement

The United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (USASBE) is pleased to announce that Steve Blank is the recipient of the 2019 John E. Hughes Award for Entrepreneurial Achievement, which will be presented at the 2019 Annual Conference in St. Pete Beach, FL, in January.

Steve is the co-creator of the Lean Startup, a prolific author and widely recognized thought leader on entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial education. His work has changed how startups are built; how entrepreneurship is taught; and how science is commercialized; how large companies and the government innovate. He has been called the father of Modern Entrepreneurship.

Arguably, no one has impacted our field more than Steve in the last 40 years.

Named to the Thinkers 50 list of top management thinkers and recognized by the Harvard Business Review as one of the 12 Masters of Innovation, Steve is an award-winning teacher of entrepreneurship at Stanford, Columbia and UC Berkeley. He is also a Senior Fellow for Entrepreneurship at Columbia.

He started his career as a serial entrepreneur, founding or working in eight startups, then turned to academia, developing the Customer Development methodology that is the foundation of Lean. His Lean LaunchPad entrepreneurship curriculum has been adopted by more than 100 universities around the globe. More than 500,000 people have signed up for a free online version of his class on Udacity.

In 2011, the National Science Foundation adopted Steve’s class to create the Innovation Corps (I-Corps), to train the nation’s top scientists and engineers on how to take their ideas from the lab to the marketplace. Today, the I-Corps program is mandated by Congress and is the standard for commercializing science in the U.S. It is taught in 81 universities; more than 1,500 student teams have taken the class.

“There’s no bigger honor than being recognized by the one organization who represents the educators who continually raise the bar of entrepreneurial education,” Steve said.

About the John E. Hughes Award

Newly revised in 2018, The John E. Hughes Award recognizes an individual who, through significant and sustained entrepreneurial initiatives, has demonstrated a unique ability to accept and manage risk, exercise personal control, and acquire personal reward.  The ideal recipient is an entrepreneur who is committed to entrepreneurship education and has demonstrated impact on the field of entrepreneurship, community leadership and philanthropic giving.

Steve has agreed to share some of his insights with USASBE members in a plenary session after he receives the award, and will give an intimate fireside chat the weekend of the conference, January 23 – 27, 2019, at the Tradewinds Island Grand Resort, St. Pete Beach, FL.
