Reasons to Attend USASBE 2019

Hi! I’m the new Assistant VP of Publications and I am ecstatic about the upcoming conference in St. Pete!   Though I’ve long been a USASBE member and I’ve attended many conferences in the past, I’m particularly excited about this coming January—primarily because I had to take a two-year hiatus from the conferences due to personal obligations.  I’m sure I’m not alone in needing to miss a conference for a year or two, and I thought I’d share a few reasons that I’m so excited to rejoin the team.

First, it’s a break from the grind of teaching and research that helps refuel the tank.  Getting out of the classroom and talking with others about their pedagogy and research inspires me to reevaluate what I’ve been doing, and inject new ideas in the classroom.

Second, collaborations are born at USASBE!  The discussions I’ve had at USASBE have paved the way for research collaborations that expand my outlook.  We are all experts in our respective fields, but I find it interesting to delve into another colleague’s area of expertise.  Our annual conference is a great opportunity to do so.

Third, I get to add a human element to the virtual collaborations I take part in all year.  I can’t count the number of people that I “know” only through e-mails and online updates (such as this newsletter!).  The ability to place a face with a name and learn a little about each other gives me the sense of broader community I’ve always sought in academia.

In short, the annual USASBE conference captures all the reasons I got into this field in the first place. It gives me a short retreat to revisit the various threads of entrepreneurial discourse, old and new, and bring them back to my career of teaching, research and service.

I hope that everyone reading this will consider not only attending the conference, but also contributing their voice —either in the form of academic and pedagogical submissions, or in the form of short contributions to this newsletter.  Whatever you are working on, there is likely an avenue to pursue and promote your work at USASBE

Here’s my picture and email, feel free to email any time prior to January, and if you see me there, feel free to come up and say hello!
