VentureWell Track Well Received

by Ethne Swartz

This year USASBE is again fortunate to have VentureWell as a sponsor of a formal workshop track.  Five workshops were scheduled and the first kicked off on Sunday morning.  Ronda Smith and Rob Matthews from Ball State University delivered an engaging workshop inspired by the “Simplexity Thinking System” pioneered by Dr. Min Basadur, based at McMaster University.  Educators and administrators at Ball State University use the process in a variety of problem solving situations, incorporating it into their curriculum as a structured means of dealing with “fuzzy” situations such as ideation or idea generation.

Attendees were treated to an interactive workshop based on the problem-solving methodology used by Ball State’s Entrepreneurship Center to systematize ideation.  Ronda and Rob simulated the process that would be used in a classroom setting.  A scenario was selected and workshop attendees were coached to work collaboratively on the problem-solving process, starting with fact finding, moving on to restating the problem, through to finally selecting and mapping a final problem statement for the chosen scenario.

Monday we had four additional sessions for this track:

·       9:15am:  A panel  led by Frank Hoy from WPI on “Exploring The Perspectives and Experiences of the Entrepreneur-Philanthropist

·       1:00pm:  Alex Bruton, from “The Innographer”, will presented “Deliberate Opportunity Design: A Framework for Experiential Learning for Innovation and Entrepreneurship”

·       1:30pm: Lynn Forsythe and colleagues from Cal State, Fresno, focused on “How to Get Started – Helping Entrepreneurs Understand Business Entities”

·       3:30pm:  Jon York and colleagues from Cal Poly considered the following:  “University Accelerators:  Entrepreneurial Launchpads or Unsustainable Fads?”

Ball State colleagues Ronda Smith and Rob Mathews talking to a participant after the workshop.
