The Future of USASBE: A Conversation with President Elect Heidi Neck

by Eric Liguori, VP Publications

Last week I had the opportunity to briefly sit down with USASBE President Elect Heidi Neck in Orlando to talk about the future of our organization. Before I tell you what she said I should note I put her on the spot: she had only just found out she was elected moments before. Here’s what she had to say:

EL: What excites you most about USASBE's future?

HN: Three things:

  1. Current leadership represents the next level of entrepreneurship education.  The group is impressive from both a teaching and research perspective.  What they all have in common, and what I share with them, is a passion for all things related to entrepreneurship education.
  2. Because of that leadership we are more likely to come together in creative ways to not only build and expand best practice but to also imagine future possibilities.
  3. Because entrepreneurship education and its possible impact is being recognized more than ever by educational institutions at all levels, USASBE is well positioned to be THE convening voice.

EL: Some have argued USASBE should abandon research and policy and focus on being/becoming the gold standard for entrepreneurship pedagogy. Any initial thoughts on that sentiment?

HN: I believe in being the gold stand for entrepreneurship education—and I would like to emphasize the word education.  Research and policy should not be abandoned, but we may want to consider a more focused approach. USASBE, for me, has always been my go-to organization for all things related to entrepreneurship education. I’d like to see the research and policy efforts geared toward the education aspect of the entrepreneurship field. This all contributes to USASBE being the leader and convener in a very unique space – a space that is not held by any other membership-driven, academic organization.

EL: What message would you like to send to the USASBE membership about the future?

HN: I wish they could hear the excitement in my voice right now.  USASBE has been a part of my career since my early days as a doctoral student at the University of Colorado.  The fact that the membership has given me this leadership opportunity is so unbelievable. I have always loved pushing the envelope in teaching and even in my writing. I try to be bold, but it’s hard to be bold alone and it’s not that fun either!  I’m really hoping that the membership and board of USASBE embrace our next bold moves, whatever they may be, so we can continue the great legacy of USASBE – one of developing the most awesome entrepreneurship educators across the country and even beyond.
