Interest Groups: Family Business

Family Business is a special interest group organized under the auspices of the Articles of Incorporation of the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (USASBE) to promote and encourage the development and advancement of programs and services in the specific entrepreneurship field and to provide a forum for information exchange.

GROUP MISSION
 

The Family Business Special Interest Group of USASBE will strengthen family business teaching and research as well as service to the entrepreneurial family firm by providing its membership with innovative pedagogical techniques through a variety of means and by encouraging research and outreach activities and dissemination of the best results.

GROUP LEADERSHIP

Leadership of the Group is elected annually by the Group membership; questions relative to Group mission, membership; annual work program and objectives should be directed to one of the following members of the leadership team:

GROUP MEMBERSHIP
 
A member of USASBE in good standing, that has professional interest in the specific field of the Group and wishes to pursue expansion and promotion of the field and personal advancement through knowledge exchange and participation in the mission of the Group, is eligible for membership.
 
GROUP ANNUAL GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
 
  1. Survey Family Business SIG membership by April 1 to determine who they are and how best the SIG could serve them. Share the results with USASBE leadership and post the results on the website by May 1.

  2. Plan and execute a pre-conference workshop focused on teaching family business with at least 20 attendees.

  3. Support USASBE efforts to explore the possibility of offering certificates for attendance at pre-conference workshops in family business by establishing a SIG committee to develop a certificate proposal and send it to the USASBE board by June 1.

  4. Encourage SIG membership to post videos, syllabi and exercises on the USASBE website with the goal of adding at least 10 video links, 10 exercises and 20 syllabi by November 1.

  5. Increase paper submissions focused on family business to 25 and workshops proposals to 10 by encouraging SIG membership to submit papers and workshops to the 2012 meeting through monthly email reminders and networking, and by supporting member efforts to organize a significant panel discussion at the meeting on intergenerational collaboration in a non-traditional family business.

  6. By September 1, identify and encourage at least three SIG members to take leadership roles of the SIG for 2012 and beyond.

  7. Send a monthly information item to the USASBE V-P of publications for use in the USASBE newsletter. SIG members will be solicited monthly to submit items of interest.
2011 Meeting Report


The meeting was spent discussing what the Family Business SIG should be and how it should most effectively serve its membership in light of recent changes in USASBE as they relate to SIGs. Members were informed of these changes and how they would affect the SIG. A report was provided on the successful preconference workshop at the Hilton Head meeting. There was a consensus at the meeting that the 164 members of the Family Business SIG should be surveyed this year so it could be determined how best to serve their interests in family business. Also discussed were possibilities for workshops at the 2012 USASBE meetings, encouragement of members to submit research papers and participate in pre-conference workshops as well as send syllabi, exercises and other examples of effective teaching techniques to the USASBE website.
